Transitional Studies - now a co-requisite model

Starting with the Summer Semester, Greenville Technical College’s Transitional Studies is moving to a co-requisite model. In place of Transitional Studies courses, all students will enter college-level English and math courses. In cases where students need additional support, they will take a co-requisite course from the same instructor teaching the curriculum course. A multiple measures placement process will determine if a student needs to take a co-requisite course.

This model is designed to help students complete college-level courses and achieve their desired program goals in less time than in the current model. It allows students to take required courses with the opportunity for focused assistance through co-requisite courses.

GENERAL PLACEMENT QUESTIONS

What model of placement does Greenville Tech use?

Greenville Tech uses a multiple measures approach. Advisors will review high school GPA and course grades, SAT and ACT scores, and/or Next Generation placement tests.

How long are multiple measures (high school grades and test scores) valid?

GTC uses a 10-year expiration date on scores.

What placement test is used?

If a student needs to take a placement test, GTC uses Next Generation Accuplacer.

What high school classes are used to determine placement?

Students with an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher will be reviewed on their last two English classes and last two math classes.

Do I need to have my high school transcript or college transcript for my advising appointment?

Yes, if GTC doesn’t have your official transcript on file, bring your unofficial transcript to your advising appointment so the advisor can best determine your placement.

If a student completed MAT 102 or MAT 105 with a C or higher, can the student enroll in the college-level math course without the co-requisite?

Yes, the student can enroll in the math course without the co-requisite.

What is a co-requisite course?

Students who do not meet the placement for their English and/or math course will be required to take their English and/or math course with a co-requisite course.

ENGLISH & MATH CO-REQUISITE COURSES

Will all students be required to take a co-requisite course if entering a math course or English 101?

The co-requisite is required for ENG 101, MAT 103, MAT 109, MAT 110, and MAT 120 unless the student meets the placement criteria to not take the co-requisite.

Which English and math courses have a co-requisite?

ENG 101 has a one-credit hour co-requisite course – ENG 012. MAT 103 has a one-credit hour co-requisite course – MAT 013. MAT 109 has a two-credit hour co-requisite course – MAT 019. MAT 110 has a two-credit hour co-requisite course – MAT 020. MAT 120 also has a one-credit hour co-requisite course – MAT 012.

Which English and math courses do not require a co-requisite?

ENG 165, MAT 155, MAT 170, and MAT 211 do not require a co-requisite course.

How do you know which courses have the co-requisite?

All college courses and the coordinating co-requisite course are coded with a 600-699 or W60-W69 section code. For example, the co-requisite for ENG 101-600 co-requisite would be ENG 012-W60. For MAT 120-001 the co-requisite would be MAT 012-601.

If a student earned a D in ENG 165 can they enroll in ENG 101 without ENG 012?

No, a student would need to have ENG 165 completion with a C or higher to keep from having to take ENG 012. The student is welcome to take the placement test if they are not able to place out of the co-requisite through other means.

Since the ENG 012 co-requisite is only offered as an online class, are students required to take COL 111?

If ENG 012 is the student's first online course at Greenville Tech, COL 111 will be required.

What grade will be received for the co-requisite courses?

Co-requisite courses will have a grade of S or U. The college level course will follow the regular 10-point grading scale.

Can students take one of the co-requisite courses to brush up on skills?

Yes, students who meet the placement for English 101 or their required math course CAN enroll in the English or math class with a co-requisite if they wish to have additional support. However, they cannot take ENG 012 or a math co-requisite as a standalone course.

Will the same instructor teach the co-requisite course?

Students taking a co-requisite English or math will have the same instructor for the college-level and co-requisite course.

FINANCIAL AID QUESTIONS

Do ENG 012, MAT 013, MAT 019, MAT 020, and MAT 012 count towards LIFE Scholarship hours?

No, these are developmental courses and do not apply in the calculation of the LIFE Scholarship or Palmetto Scholars Scholarship GPA or hours.

Can a student that is eligible for LIFE still delay the start of LIFE if they are taking a co-requisite course?

Only if the total college-level courses enrolled is 11 credit hours or less. It is important to speak with a Financial Aid counselor to understand the rules for delaying LIFE.

Will ENG 012, MAT 013, MAT 019, MAT 020, and MAT 012 be covered by financial aid?

It depends on the type of financial aid awarded. Federal aid (Pell Grant and Student Loans) will pay up to 30 credit hours of remedial course work. Lottery will fund remedial coursework. LIFE Scholarship will not pay for remedial hours.
